Tribal Executive Committee and Sub-committees

The Constitution of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe delegates all governmental powers to the Tribal Executive Committee and the six Reservation Tribal Councils/Reservation Business Committees. The Tribal Executive Committee is comprised of the six Chairmen and six Secretary/Treasurers of the member reservations. These twelve persons are elected by enrolled members of their reservations to serve four year terms. The terms of the Chairman and Secretary/Treasurers are staggered so that elections are held every two years. The Bylaws of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe specifically delegate various administrative duties to the four officers of the Tribe who are the President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Officers are elected from within the Tribal Executive Committee, by its twelve members, every two years following general elections.

While subcommittees of the Tribe are not mandated by the Tribal Constitution, they serve an important role in the Tribe’s governmental structure. The subcommittees generally serve in an advisory capacity to the Tribal Executive Committee. Created by resolution of the Tribal Executive Committee, this structure provides flexibility in pursuing the objectives enumerated in the Constitution. This structure also ensures a greater voice in tribal affairs by the governed and allows the members of the Tribal Executive Committee to devote more time to the activities of their respective reservations. Unless a specific membership is designated by the empowering resolution, each subcommittee will consist of no more than six members. One subcommittee member must come from each of the six member reservations. All subcommittee members must be elected members of a Reservation Tribal Council, and at least two must be members of the Tribal Executive Committee. subcommittee members are appointed by their respective Reservation Tribal Councils. All subcommittee members serve at the discretion of their Reservation Tribal Councils.
